Beating weather blues

As the days get shorter, darker, and colder, I’ve noticed how easy it is to feel a little off. If your mood feels tied to the weather or season, trust me, you’re not alone—I feel it too. That’s why I wanted to share some simple ways I lift my spirits when the weather has me feeling gloomy.

Cozy Music

Music is a total game-changer for me. I’ve found that creating or finding playlists that match the mood I want to be in can make a huge difference. Personally, I avoid sad songs when I’m already feeling down as they just amplify my sadness. Instead, if I’m studying or working from home, I gravitate toward lo-fi beats or jazz for a relaxed yet productive vibe. I also love “customizing” my playlists to match the current season or upcoming holidays. My current favorite YouTube channels for background music are Lofi Girl and Cozy Little Nook, but there are so many great playlists available on YouTube (I also love Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter themed playlists).

I keep the music playing softly in the background while I go about my routine, whether I’m cooking, working, or reading. Trust me, you won’t notice the gloomy weather as much, especially if you stream the playlist on your TV, as you’ll get to enjoy the lovely visuals and be transported to a cozy cafe or a scenic mountain retreat (shout-out to the TV crackling fireplace that never dies out).

Turn on All the Lights

I know it’s not the most eco-friendly habit, but I’ve noticed a huge boost in my mood when I turn on all the lights in my space. There’s also a big difference between cool-toned and warm-toned lights, with warmer lights being easier on my eyes and (in my opinion) better at mimicking a sunny day. I’ve tried those light therapy lamps that everyone recommends, but honestly, the bright white beam felt so harsh and artificial that it gave me a headache instead of helping. Regular lamps work perfectly fine too, so if you feel like your house is too dimly lit, just get yourself a few more lamps. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money; Facebook Marketplace is full of people selling lamps at very affordable prices (you can take my word for it, as I am a bit of a Facebook Marketplace addict).

Go Outside (Even If It’s Cold)

Fresh air and natural light are a neccesity, even on cloudy days. No excuses; bundle up in your coziest layers and take a short walk. Even 10 minutes can make a difference and help you feel more energized! Take it a step further and actually embrace outdoor activities. For example, I find that enaging in winter activities, like ice skating, sledding, or even building a snowman, helps me to appreciate winter more rather than simply wishing it were summer. And pro-tip: get yourself a warm cup of coffee for an extra little boost.

Move Your Body (Even a Little)

It’s hard to feel motivated when the weather’s blah, but even a little movement can help. I know I am copying Meredith and Cristina, but dancing around your room really does do wonders. You can also do a quick stretching session, or some stationary bike while watching TV. You don’t have to go all out, just get moving in some way.

Stay Connected with People

Winter can make you want to hibernate, but don’t let yourself get isolated. Send a voice memo to a friend, plan a coffee date, or schedule a virtual (or real) movie night. I personally love to call my family during my walks, particularly when it is very dark outside. It helps me feel less alone and makes the walk pass by so much quicker (and takes my mind off my freezing fingers and toes).

Tea, Plants, and a Cute Cozy Outfit

I’ve have 3 more small, random things to mention:

  1. Tea just makes everything warmer and more comforting. My favorite tea is Lady Grey and my favorite herbal tea is Mint.
  2. Plants add life to your house, especially when all the plants outside are leafless or dead.
  3. And of course, how can you not smile when you look and feel good (wearing cute socks and sweaters makes a big difference for me)

Rainy days and winter don’t have to determine your mood. With a few small changes, you can keep your spirits up even when the weather’s not on your side. And remember you’re not alone, so reach out to friends and family. You’ve got this! 🌟
