Yesterday was my first experience assisting in a delivery as a med student. What started as a calm, uneventful shift waiting in the triage room quickly escalated. Before I fully realized what was happening, I found myself in the OR as the team moved swiftly to prep for an emergency C-section. The energy in the room was of pure focus and urgency, and then, in what felt like a split second, the baby was delivered, her first cries filling the air. My eyes were quickly filled with tears as I began processing what I had just witnessed. It was a powerful reminder of how unpredictable life is. Everything can change in a matter of seconds, which is why it is so important to be adaptable and to expect the unexpected. Often times, I fear change and the unknown. But I want to keep learning how to embrace and find joy in the unexpected, just as I did during this delivery. After all, life’s surprises are often the most rewarding experiences.
