Watching Ghost sit on the front porch today, just staring up at the trees, I found myself wondering, do dogs think about the future? Does Ghost ever imagine tomorrow’s walk, or anticipate seeing a squirrel? Does he wonder what’s for dinner? Or is he simply too enchanted by whatever smells are carried by the breeze? As far as I can tell, he really lives in the moment. I don’t think he is ever worrying about whether he chased the ball “well enough” earlier, or whether he drank enough water throughout the day. It made me laugh that the thing I struggle most with, being present, is something my dog seems to master without even trying. Surely if Ghost can do it, so can I? Maybe I need to take more porch breaks and just…stare at the trees.
