Mindful eating

Lately, I’ve been trying something you may have heard of called ‘mindful eating’. I realized that I usually multitask during meals, whether it’s watching a show, scrolling through my phone, reading emails, or even studying. The problem is that I often ended up eating past the point of hunger without really enjoying my food. So recently, I’ve been trying to slow things down and actually pay attention to what and how I’m eating.

One of the biggest shifts has been learning to tune into my actual hunger. Instead of eating just because it’s a certain time or because something looks good, I try to pause and ask myself if I’m genuinely hungry. More often than I expected, the answer is no. Now, I aim to eat when I truly feel hungry, rather than when I’m bored or anxious.

Another thing I’ve started doing is taking small pauses between servings. After finishing a plate, I wait a few minutes before deciding whether I want more. Most of the time, I realize I’m already satisfied and don’t need a second round. Sometimes, I do still feel hungry, and in that case I’ll happily go for a second serving. This small habit has helped me avoid that uncomfortably full feeling I used to get after most meals. Of course, I still love going to all-you-can-eat sushi or enjoying a big brunch once in a while!

A last little tip I wanted to mention is to start eating a salad before the main part of your meal. It kind of feels like a warmup and by the time I get to the rest of the food, I’m less ravenous (and the whole meal feels more satisfying and intentional).

I usually still end up watching a TV show while eating, especially on the weekends or after a long day, but I’ve found that with these small changes, I can still eat mindfully without needing to give my full attention to every bite. And I’ve definitely noticed that I feel more more appreciative of the food in front of me.

So if you are trying to lose weight, want to enjoy the experience of eating more, or want to reduce that bloated, overly full feeling after eating, I really recommend trying this mindful eating approach! Bon appétit xx
