Sarah J. Maas
Even more worth the hype

** WARNING: This post contains spoilers **
If you can’t already tell by my rating, I absolutely loved this book. The plot had me completely hooked from the start (maybe even a bit obsessed). What makes A Court of Mist and Fury especially compelling is how incredibly real it feels. The themes of heartbreak, healing, relationships, and self-discovery are so relatable and brilliantly woven throughout the plot.
Can we please take a moment to gush over Rhysand? I mean, come on. It didn’t take long at all for him to grow on me, and he quickly became one of my favorite characters in the series. His character is written with so much depth and complexity, making him feel genuinely human. At first glance he is confident and mysterious, but the more you learn about him, the clearer it becomes how much pain he has endured and how deeply he cares for those he loves. His strength is not just in his magical powers but in how he trusts others and respects their autonomy. The way he supports Feyre, for example, without controlling or manipulating her makes their relationship feel meaningful and respectful.
And let’s talk about the Inner Circle…please sign me up for their friend group! Cassian, Azriel, Mor, and Amren each bring something unique, and their fierce loyalty to one another transforms their friendship into family. Watching Feyre gradually find her place among them is so sweet. I admit, I’m even a bit jealous at times (like when I watch too many episodes of Friends). Whether they are strategizing for war or sharing meals in the townhouse, their interactions are filled with humor, warmth, and unspoken trust, giving the story an emotional depth more profound than in ACOTAR.
The world-building in this book blows my mind. Velaris feels like a city I could genuinely step into. I vividly picture the Rainbow bustling with artists and color, the cozy warmth of the townhouse, and the quiet majesty of the House of Wind overlooking the sea. Every detail of Velaris reveals another layer of Rhysand’s character. Unlike the Spring Court, whose beauty is obvious and surface-level, Velaris is not just visually stunning, it feels like home.
One of my favorite parts of ACOMAF is getting a deeper glimpse into Feyre’s inner dialogue. You do not just see what she does or hear what she says, but actually get to sit with her thoughts, her fears, her guilt, and her quiet moments of hope. Her growth feels authentic because you can see it unfold. It is not about her becoming someone completely different but about having the time and space to rediscover herself and learn to trust her instincts again.
Also, can we just acknowledge how touching the concept of the mating bond is? I love that it is not portrayed as an instant magical spark, but rather something that builds over time and becomes stronger with each shared moment. Rhysand never pressures Feyre, even after waiting 500 years for her. He lets her come to that realization on her own, even as he quietly endures the pain of watching her love someone else. The idea that someone can be meant for you and still give you complete freedom makes their bond feel so special and moving.
I am honestly shocked by how drastically my opinion of Tamlin changes between ACOTAR and this book (and rightfully so). I really liked him at first. He was brave, devoted, and seemed willing to do anything to protect Feyre and his court. But as Feyre grows, it becomes clear that Tamlin’s love is rooted in control and fear. His connection with Feyre feels mostly physical, and it is missing the deeper emotional, intellectual, and spiritual intimacy that she shares with Rhysand. It shows how blinding first love can be, and how healing allows you to see more clearly and develop the courage to choose what is truly best for you. It also shows that for a relationship to survive, both people have to grow together. Otherwise, it will inevitably run its course.
Somehow, this story about fae, war, and ancient powers feels more honest and relatable than most contemporary novels I have read. It made me feel happy and inspired…and completely addicted. I cannot wait to dive into the next book. Thanks again to my sister for recommending (a.k.a. forcing) me to start this series xx
