What cannot be known hollows the mind. Fill it not with guesswork.
-Galadriel
There are many things we simply cannot know, the biggest being what will happen next.
But if your brain is anything like mine, it hates being empty, and so it tries to fill itself up by predicting all the possible outcomes. And unfortunately, it is really great at thinking about all the worst outcomes.
The problem is that our predictions don’t feel like predictions for long. We start treating them as facts, then worrying about the what ifs we created ourselves.
So I challenge myself, and all of you, to work on trusting ourselves: trusting that whatever happens, we will find a way to figure it out, including by asking those around us for help. And by practicing this, we won’t need to worry about all the possible things that could go wrong, because it won’t matter! Whatever happens, we can trust that we will be able to navigate it.
Now I don’t want to come off as though I have mastered this mindset. To be honest, I greatly struggle with focusing on the present task at hand in an objective way, and often get carried away with all the ways in which I could fail. But all we can do is try our best everyday, and it will eventually become easier and easier to do, until it becomes a habit.
